Writing a biodata in Urdu script

Urdu terms, field by field
Each Urdu word carries a little more meaning than its English label. Use the one your family would say out loud.
مسلک (sect and school)
Write it the way your family does: سنی حنفی، دیوبندی، بریلوی، اہلِ حدیث، شیعہ اثنا عشری or داؤدی بوہرہ. One or two words is enough.
برادری and ذات
Some families say برادری (Syed, Sheikh, Ansari, Qureshi, Pathan, Mughal), and in Pakistan many say ذات (Arain, Rajput, Jat, Awan). Both rows are optional. Whether to show them is your family’s decision, and an empty row disappears from the page.
دینداری (religious practice)
Rishta biodatas in Urdu often use set phrases here: صوم و صلوٰۃ کا پابند for a man, صوم و صلوٰۃ کی پابند for a woman, meaning regular in prayer and fasting. You can add حافظِ قرآن, a نماز row, or باپردہ if she observes purdah and wants it said.
والد کا نام and honorifics
Urdu biodatas are formal about parents. Write جناب before the father’s name and محترمہ before the mother’s, and مرحوم or مرحومہ after the name of a parent who has passed away. Give the father’s occupation in plain words: ریٹائرڈ سرکاری افسر, کاروبار or زمیندار.
Pakistani, Hyderabadi and Lucknowi conventions
Urdu biodatas differ by city. These are common habits, not rules; keep the ones your family uses.
- Pakistani (Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad). ذات is often listed, height is given in feet and inches, and income in PKR. Many families add a row for the house (ذاتی مکان) and the area they live in. Leave out your CNIC number; it has no place on a biodata.
- Hyderabadi (Deccan). Families often write “Hyderabadi Sunni” or give the Old City or new-city area as the native place. Gulf and US jobs are common, so add the country and visa status in one row.
- Lucknowi (Awadh). Shia and Sunni families both write the مسلک clearly, and Syed families often mention lineage. The tone is formal: آداب in a cover message, جناب and محترمہ throughout.
- Bihar, UP and Maharashtra. Many Hindi-speaking Muslim families prepare an Urdu biodata for grandparents and a Hindi or English one for everyone else. Keep both in “My documents”.
